This is a simple set of house rules used by my group for DnD in the Iron Kingdom, this could happily be used anywhere.

Health

To represent the debilitating effect of being beaten over the head by a goblin wielding a club I have simply introduced a way of dividing the health you have into sections and the lower your health goes the harder it is to do something

Wounds

Total

Current

Healthy

0

Grazed

-1

Hurt

-3

Injured

-5

The wound box should look something like this.

Simply split your characters total into 5 and place them into the 5 boxes (-5 having twice as much space before death), and additional wounds being placed into boxes from top to bottom.

Quintis a level 1 paladin has 12 wounds his first 10 are split equally into two lots of five but the last two are simply placed in the top to boxes of the health chart and would look something like this.

Action points (an alternative perspective)

I liked the concept of action points, see them as a heroic burst, and adrenaline rush or just a second chance at something but I think their cool.  What I dont find cool was the fact you only got a few per level, it seems your character become less and less heroic the stronger they get I say rubbish to this and throw it out the window.

What I use and propose to the rest of you is simple, and by simple I offer an equation, take the 3 highest ability modifiers a character has add them together and divide by three in the case of our recurring character, Quintis, it is simple.

Ability Score

Ability Mod

Temp Score

Temp Mod

Str Strength

12

1

Dex Dexterity

8

-1

Con Constitution

14

2

Int Intelligence

10

0

Wis Wisdom

14

2

Cha Charisma

16

3

Cha of +3, Wis and Con of +2 each. So 3+2+2=7   7/3=2.333 recurring rounded to the nearest number is 2.

This gives Quintis 2 action points, but how often to allow them.

I personally offer action points to players as a per day thing but feel free to offer them as often as you feel necessary. The more often players can use them the more heroic games may be, but to give them to many may make them feel invincible.
